the dead. and we are learning more about the alleged shatter as well. the fact that he purchased 4 guns and 6000 rounds of ammunition leading up to this attack. >> got shot. >>reporter: they staggered out on their own or they were carried away. blood streaming from bullet wounds. >> my god. >>reporter: inside a horror scene. carnage started suddenly during a midnight screening of new batman movie. police believe 24-year-old james holms calmly watched the movie along with everybody else. then got up and used the cell phone. went outside to get his weapons and gear up with bullet proof vest. ballistic helmet. gas mask and gear covering his throat legs and tactical glove gloves. holms went back inside to the front of the theater and rurld 2 green cap sisters. >> then i saw plumes of smoke. >> then he shot up in the air and everybody started to to pap ick at that point. he came down with the gun in my face 3 feet away from me at that poin point. i was terrified so i just jumped forward that the aisle and kind of buried myself

in there and tried to just hide myself. ended up shooting behind me. at that moment i remember thinking i'm not going to die in here. me and my kids are not going to die in hereism it was just chaos. >>reporter: marched up and down the aisle using arsenal. shotgun block pistols and only stopped to reload. minutes later police captured him in the parking lot. but still not over. police using robot trying to get in the suspect apartment. he warned officers that it was boob trapped and it is. with trip wires and containers of flammable lickd with. >> it is a very vexing problem how to enter that apartment sale. i have never seen anything like what the pictures show us is in there. >>reporter: just horrifying experience. on sunday the victims family and friend will be holding a vij. we also learn investigators returning to holms apartment tomorrow to

detonate the series of booby-traps they located. this is abc news. new become to you. >> thank you. >> james holms has some root in central, california. he is the grandson of decorated military veteran who taught at the prison teen us york school in monterey. holms uncle lives from carmel. last nature holms apparently came ready for war. police say in the last 60 days holms bought 4 guns from local gun shops and 6000 rounds of ammunition off the internet. one of the weapons was a smith and wesson assault rifle like this one that we can show you here. it had a special magazine that could fire as many as 100 bullet in minutes. the bullet have such high rate of speed they can travel through 2 or 3 people at a time apparently. he also had a 12 gauge shotgun as you have heard and 240 caliber pistols. sources tell us that holms is a classic lone wolf time. he has no ties to terrorist organizations and no criminal record. and that's important because it means he could pass

every background check. he both bought the guns legally at 3 local sporting good stores. right now james holms this gun man is in a county key tension facility he will appear in court on monday morning. police say his apartment is a cat creates of trip wires and booby-trap. brian ross tonight with who the man is. >> he moved to colorado last fall. came across as quiet and easy going college student. but it was a different jim holms who showed up at the san diego pawn shop over the last few months asking for tips about firing a gun. >> i medley recognized him when i saw his picture. i was my first words out of my mouth was oh, my god he looks very familiar. >>reporter: last nature neighbors at his aurora apartment building heard loud techno music blaring around midnight from the room. recorded sounds of gunshots. >> neglect that i almost opened the door to his apartment and then i was banging on the door and thank god this he wasn't there. >> then holms apparently

attempted to make himself into the joker character of the batman series. according to briefing given to the new york police commissioner. >> we had his hair painted rechltd he said he was the joker. >>reporter: it was over the last if you months that holms who was phi beta kappa in college saw his academic and career dreams collapse as he began to withdraw from p hd program in neuroscience at the university of colorado oychlt these events usually come on after somebody thinks about and plans for these attacks. >>reporter: this is holms just 6 years ago. called jimmy. clean cut. 5 foot 11. high school senior in sdaichlingt he had been a member of the junior varsity soccer team. >> he was just quiet. he was just quiet. >>reporter: when his mother psychiatric nurse first contacted at san diego home this morning she did not seem surprised that something had happened. you have got the right person she told abc news. i have got to call the police. today his father robert left the family home in san diego

under police protection to fly to denver. in colorado, police continue to search holms apartment which was described as elaborately booby-trapped with chemicals and incidiary devices. >> brian ross reporting. now police said he was so calm because had he taken the pain killer vicodin. intense situation at the apartment. it's booby-trap full of trip wires containers of flammable liquid and large improper priced explosive device. situation so dangerous authorities have camera scanning the room. one official told us that holms is some kind of mad scientist. >> that room about were designed to explode if police had raced through the door. officials believe it was part of a plan to massacre police if he had been killed at the scen scene. it could take days before that unit is secured. whether he will there are

>> fbi is investigating the discovery of white powder found today in envelopes delivered by mail to police headquarters in hayward, san leandro, berkeley and union city. union city is where thomas is live tonight with the very latest on this strange and developing story. thomas. >> indeed. the members of those 4 police departments now breathing a little bit easier tonight. one officer told us that whoever sent these envelopes now has the attention of federal investigators.

. discovery of the envelope with white powder began at the hayward police department nip:45 this morning. alameda county fire department hazmat team called out and partial evacuation of the building investigators checked the content. clerk opening mail discovered envelope containing white powder and called the alert. turned out to be flour. union city police commander found a similar envelope after getting a heads up from the alameda county fire chief. >> i was able to fine the letter move to the side call the fire department and at that point we just had the fire department come hear and take a look at it but the lets still sealed. >>reporter: fbi has the letter. city hall is dark every other friday due to bump it cut sought mail still sitting in a box whether the commander removed it. half hour earlier san leandro police department employee opened an envelope containing white powder. after response and partial evacuation the powder here was also determine to be flour. berkeley police department was also partially evacuated after clerk opened

envelope and white powder spilled ou. >> we evacuated the area lower floor of the public safety building. we had other parts of the be shelter in place. we had turned off our heating and ventilation air conditioning units to the building. >>reporter: berkeley deputy fire chief says the powder was vegetable base. none of the envelope contain ore any other information. >> just addressed to the police department. >> yes. no return address. none of that stuff. p. >>reporter: commander says he sent out alert to all bay area police departments with photo of the envelope just in case. fbi says it's investigating and says sending a hoax letter is a serious crime. abc 7 news. >> thank you thomas. >> sacramento man arrested for setting that big fire in placer county. california department of forestry and fire protection says 28-year-old brian mason was taken 52 custody today. he is being held on suspicion of

recklessly setting fire to forget land and property. fire has burned moren 2600 acres near forest hill in placer county and destroyed at least one home. crew expect to have it fully contained tomorrow. >> suspended san francisco sheriff mirkarimi and his wife reunited. lopez had her fingers crossed q as you see here as she walked in the hall of justice this morning. mirkarimi was just minutes behind her. lopez testified before a judge that she would feel safe for herself and her son theo should a seven month stay away order be lifte lifted. moments later it was. fichlt best is that he will have his time together. that's the best. >>reporter: mirkarimi still may last his job as sheriff. he was suspended for pleading guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence charge. lopez testified last night at the ethic commission hearing and completely loyal to her husban

paramedic intern for american medical response suffered minor injuries. ambulance was not transporting any patients. 2 people led police on hay speed chase from oakland across the bay bridge this afternoon. oakland police followed them as they drove at speeds up to 85 miles an hour. you can see there black suv we have highlighted it weaving through traffic on the bay bridge. recklessly. eventually crashed at the fremont street exit in san francisco. at least 3 vehicles involve. exit was shut down and 5 ambulances sent to the scene. sky 7 hd overhead there as well as police arrested these 2 men behind the wheel. they suffered my inner injuries. at least 3 other people hurt in the crash. police say the men they were chasing are wanted for robbery and burglary. the head of the state park department is suddenly out of a job tonight following the discovery of an unreported 54 million dollars in department

to be getting a phone call. now it's believed that was an excuse for him to get up from the seat and leave for one of the emergency exits. as the movie continues outside authorities believe he was gearing up. dressed in black wearing a vest helmet gas mask gear covering throat legs and xwlovs toovlt he's heard saying i am the joker. they say he hurled 2 green canister. >> i heard the sound of metdal canister clinking around and then i saw plume of smoke. >>reporter: this smoke carrying some sort of irritant spread. witness say it smelled like pepper spray and so many were tricked into thinking it was simply a special effect stunt all part of the movie until standing in front of the screen he opens fire. jennifer told us she was face-to-face with the gun man. >> pointed a gun at you. >> yes at me. anybody else in the row near me.what did you d do. >> at that point i said i got to movement i literally just dove as far as could i dive

survived. so did the emotional scars of this day. story now from 7 news reporter david louie. >> i was face down on the floor and my glasses were filling full of blood. i thought i'm the only one in this room that blood has to be from me. i have been shot. >>reporter: greg to the hit in the finger and face by buck shot 24 years ago when richard farley burst into defense contractor esl in sunnyvale. 7 people were killed. scott was one of 4 wounded. as he lay on the floor of his office, is what went through his mind for about a minute. >> you have been shot you are bleeding profuse limit probably going to bleed to death. >>reporter: he doesn't recall any pain. even when pellet lodged in the neck. however it was a long wait over an hour before he could leave because the gunman was in the adjacent office when he could escape his brain gave his eye what is some would call x-ray vision. >> everything from the moment i opened the door to the office and until i was at the bottom

of the stairs was black and white. i knew i could not step anywhere if it was black. i learned later on that i had actually stepped over 2 bodies of co-workers on the way out. >>reporter: once in the care of paramedic and later at the hospital, scott says his brain played trick was his sense of time. >> i remember lacking at the clock and thinking that it was taking the secondhand a long time to go around the clock. >>reporter: ceramic cup knicked by the same buck shot that hit him is the rare reminder of the massacre. his mind still remembers his brush with death. modified his behavior. >> can't go into a room any more without checking out 2 exits. you go into a conference room and want to be seated next to one of the doors of. it changes everything about your life. >>reporter: scott says he keeps the name of number of psychiatrist in his wall lechlt he has received counseling and

says he's doing fine. but not all survivors are of shootings fare as well. scott says some of his co-survivors have crawled no a shell. in sunny wail abc 7 news. >> about theater massacre in colonel republican and democrat 0prompting more calls for tighter gun control in california. even though this state has reputation for having the toughest gun law in the country. annette is in sacramento with that part of the story. >>reporter: pwraevd campaign to prevent gun violence rank california as having the strongest gun control law ins the country. while the state has had the assault weapon ban in place for nearly 2 decades brady campaign says the aurora shooting highlights the need for tighter restriction. >> we do have an assault weapon ban but how you define what an assault weapon is, is a little tricky and manufacturers have figured out how to get around that. >>reporter: even before the theater massacre state

lawmakers had been working on several gun patrol proposal including one that require the reporting of lost or stolen firearms. open care of unloaded long gun and unloaded care of unloaded handgun already prohibited and make it harder to reload the bullets. >> we have a bullet button. >>reporter: store owner showed us a weapon like the one used in colorado. if the suspect had bought the rifle in california it would have come with a bullet button that slows down the time to reload. 10 bullets is the limit magazine t.these are same california need more gun law. >> compared to the rest of the nation they are a little bit over kill. right now we have enough law in place to adequately keep anything from owning a gun that shouldn't. with the exception of on the street purchase that we have no control over. >>reporter: tragedy spark legislation. >> we should all be asking our
